One of the main driving forces behind getting your patio covered in the first place is to provide for some much needed shade outdoors.  There are a variety of ways to achieve this but there is nothing quite like a patio cover to give you both a handsome look and functional shade.  In addition to the shade that you will get, you will also find that your yard is enhanced esthetically as well.  Patio covers make a great addition to any outdoor space.

The trick to getting the right type of patio covering to meet your needs is to know what type of shade you want.  In other words, there is dappled shade, shade provided by vines and then solid shade provided by something like a patio roof would give.  There are many different definitions of roof that one could use, but it would include anything that simply goes overhead on your patio structure.  In the case of a pergola, the roof is typically made of stringers that rest on beams.  These beams can be spaced to allow for more or less sun penetration.  In some applications, it can look quite nice to have a fabric material like burlap or other organic looking material to be used as the ‘roof’ allowing some light to come through, but still providing that great shade protection in the summer months. A burlap roof beneath your patio covers stringers could also provide for a great framework for vines to grab hold to.

Another idea is to get a metal patio roof.  These could be done with copper or steel and age very gracefully.  There are ways to speed up the process as well, but a nice weathering will give them a charm all their own.  Not only will they look great then, but in years to come.  These roofs are known for their longevity.  A metal roof can last anywhere from 30-60 years or more.  Don’t be surprised if they outlive you!

The pitter patter of rain is also something unique to a metal roof.  The sound is like nothing else you have heard.  It is possible to get a similar effect from a plastic or vinyl roof, but nothing is quite the same as the original metal.  If you want to find yourself enjoying your backyard space again, go over to Patio Covers Place for some great ideas for patio living and accessories.  Whether you are as enthusiastic about your patio as they are, you are sure to find some very helpful information there.
